After-school BLAST is….

a literature-based, trauma-informed after-school program that encourages students kindergarten-5th grade to explore the world around them by engaging in activities which build skills in language, science, fine arts, and emotional intelligence.

Each night begins with a dinner, and time to talk about the day, play games and wind down from school. Maria Montessori said that “play is the work of the child” and we thing she was right. We encourage supervised, free play for the first hour of the program.

The second hour of the program is spent reading a piece of classic children’s literature aloud together. “Books are magic,” program director Megan Westra is fond of saying, “they can take you anywhere, teach you anything, the whole world is in books.” After reading group, students split into small groups to further explore the content they just read in hands-on ways.

BLAST is primarily staffed by our Youth Leadership Interns under the supervision of our BLAST program director, Megan Westra. There are occasional volunteer opportunities at BLAST, please contact Megan for more information about current opportunities.
